A recent report indicated that after surveying the records of all 50 states,
more than 2,400 United States doctors have been sanctioned for sexually
abusing their patients. More astonishing than that number is the number
of doctors and physicians that were able to keep their licenses after
accusations were determined true—more than half doctors were able
to keep their licenses through state medical boards!
Many have compared this culture of secrecy to the scandal involving Catholic
priests. Allegations and criminal activity have just been swept under
the rug. Victims have not been able to receive the justice they deserve.
Luckily, not every case has been brushed aside. Some high-profile cases
have received the attention from the media as well as criminal prosecutions.
However, even if a doctor is convicted of a sex crime and loses his or
her license, many times these doctors are able to reapply to practice again.
One doctor, who had been accused of 140 counts of patient sexual abuse,
was able to continue practicing and seeing patients as the California
Medical Board reviewed his case during a three-year investigation. Only
after those three years was his license revoked.
