After being involved in a car accident, what should I do?

If you are involved in a car accident, remain at the scene of the accident and contact the police.  If possible and in a safe location, leave your car in the same position after the accident to allow the police to investigate and determine who was at fault.  Provide the police department with your driver’s license, insurance information and registration.  You should fully cooperate with the investigating police officer, however, keep in mind that what you say at the accident scene could be used against you in the future.  Please understand that you do not need to provide a statement to the officer but should be done if you are confident as to what happened and what occurred during the accident.  If you are injured, request medical attention.  Be sure to obtain the other drivers insurance information and after leaving the scene of the accident, contact your insurance carrier as well as the other driver’s insurance carrier to report the claim.  If you have been injured in a car accident, contact an attorney at Preston & Salango for a free consultation.
