Report Outlines Deplorable Treatment in West Virginia Behavioral Health Centers

A 19-year-old requiring direct care at all times ingested antifreeze and was provided no care

A person who needed care was repeatedly sprayed with a water hose outside of his residence “for noncompliance of staff directives” The abuse was captured on video.

A person with disabilities was repeatedly restrained with heavy blankets piled on top of him, even covering his head. Staff sat on him for long periods of time, sometimes sleeping or playing on their phones.

A report released by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Services Office of Health Facility Licensure and Certification details the abuse endued by West Virginia residents with mental and intellectual disabilities.

The abuse is appalling.
